Historical Fiction and Snacks for Inquisitive 8th-Grade Learners
Help me give my students a historical and literary perspective of The Japanese Internment camps, some snacks to eat, and fidgets to help focus while reading.
During the 2nd quarter of the school year, we begin one of our most important units of the year. The 8th-grade general education core teachers create small book clubs in class and learn about Japanese American incarceration during WWII. This unit is educational for my students, as they will learn to process historical fiction books as reflective readers and also learn about that time in history.
The Japanese Internment camps were a significant part of American history, and I am looking forward to sharing it with my students from both historical and literary perspectives.
In our unit, students will read books that are written about and through the eyes of middle-school aged children. This helps my students really imagine that time, and understand what it must have been like. In our group discussions, students will share their understandings and hear and analyze each other's perspectives. They will learn to become thoughtful speakers and listeners as they comprehend this complex time.
I'm also asking for fidget support and snacks for students to use while reading and studying. The students in my class are often hungry for a snack before lunch. They often ask for chips or a bag of popcorn to snack on in class while they complete work. The students loved the fidget bands that we were able to borrow from another teacher to use while they focus on work. I hope that the lap pads will also help them focus and feel calm.
