Savvy Students Seeking Emotional and Physiological Wellbeing
Help me give my students yoga bolsters to improve their mental and emotional well being by physiologically calming their nervous system and reducing their heart rate through meditation during their yoga classes.
Two of the six “Strategic Directions” of our district are “Social and Emotional Well-Being” and “Equity.” We believe that our yoga classes foster the emotional well-being of our students while being equally accessible to all our students.
Our high school has an extremely high academic culture which causes a great deal of stress and anxiety within our students.
During yoga the students have daily practice focused on yoga postures and meditation. Through meditation students strengthen their self-regulation and ability to focus on coursework. The students gain a new perspective on stressful situations while building their skills to manage stress. Meditation increases self-awareness, helps students focus on the present, and reduces negative emotions. Mediation also helps to build the imagination and creativity, as well as deepen a person’s patience and tolerance from themselves and others.
Currently our students can only lie or sit on the floor on their yoga mats to do meditation. With the funds to obtain the meditation cushions our students will be able to have a choice. The meditation cushions, which relieves pressure in the back, hips, and knees, will allow students to sit more comfortably in “Easy Pose” which allows them to stay in more focused and present meditation for a longer time. Since these yoga cushions are not consumable, they may be used for many years to the benefit of a larger number of students.
Another addition to this funding request is the set of stop watches. During the Power Walking classes, the students have social interaction while working to improve their posture and time in walking each mile. A common "Smart Goal" among the students is to improve their walking time in the mile. The students will be in groups of four using the stop watches to time and record their progress over the year.
