My Students

First graders are fascinating to teach because they love to learn; my challenge while working with seven-year-olds in 2022 is the range of learners in my classroom. Due to the pandemic, students have a wide range of missing skills and prior school experiences. We live in a rural, Title One school district, with a majority receiving free or reduced-price lunches. Some of the kids' most positive experiences are at school.

Students today need to study and understand the world we live in so they can make decisions and make a positive impact in the future.

Science instruction encourages students to learn through exploration and questioning. These are exactly the kind of learning experiences and opportunities students need as they transition back to full in-person learning.

My students live in a rural, Title I school district, with a majority receiving free or reduced-price lunches. There is a wide range of learners in my class, including gifted students, students with special education needs, students with socio-emotional delays, students with multiple homes, single-parent homes, and neglectful homes.

My Project

A recent Edutopia article, written by Pam Goodner, reads, “Science instruction boosts students’ curiosity and encourages collaboration, which will help them transition back to in-person school.” Amid the pandemic, science instruction often has been shoved aside. While math and reading are essential subjects, elementary students need more science instruction. Goodner continues, “By creating time for science, school leaders and educators give students the space and opportunity to build knowledge, interact with classmates, problem-solve, and engage in important content at an age when they are at their most curious.”

My class will use these materials to meet first grade standards through whole group demonstrations and small group learning stations.

First grade Missouri Learning Science Standards include: experimental design, weather/temperature/energy, plants and animals, map/globes, applications in technology. The easy reader books will provide extensions in reading and writing while rich read alouds will provide facts and information. The puzzles, games and creation materials will enhance hands-on learning and exploration. All of these materials will be used again and again for students now and in the future.
