Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I always tell my students, "I wish someone would tell me that I'm not allowed to do anything right now except enjoy a book of my choice." For the first time in my 5th graders' school careers they have been given time to read for pleasure, except we are missing a classroom library.

My students are 5th graders at an inner city charter school.

My students are inquisitive and have the maturity to think deeply and critically about the world. They come from diverse backgrounds and have a respect for each others' differences unlike any student population I have worked with in my 8 years as an educator. The experiences they bring to the classroom range from that of the Caribbean, Africa, and South America. Many of my students have a thirst for knowledge but are struggling readers. In order for my students to become proficient readers, I want them to engage in reading for pleasure every single day.

My Project

My students will use the classroom library to increase their reading stamina and to find a love for reading. I am driven to have my students understand that reading is not just a school related activity, but a requirement for being an informed and active member of society. Once my students find this pleasure in reading it will only enhance their school experiences and push them forth as critical thinkers. My students will then be able to connect ideas among disciplines and the real world to become life long learners.

5th grade is the age when students cross that threshold of learning to read to reading to learn.

I want my students to understand how imperative it is to read every day, all different types of texts to gain knowledge. Although I work with many struggling readers, I see it as a necessity that they begin reading for pleasure to become more proficient readers. Additionally, that they understand the importance of being a good reader and how reading leads to future success.
