My Students

Our fifth-grade students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They love having different opportunities to express their various learning styles. They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are our inspiration!

Our school is located in West Harlem (Title I District).

Our student population is diverse and includes Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian), Biracial, ENL (English as a New Language), IEP (Individualized Education Program) students. Diversity within our school is something we embrace and nurture.

My Project

These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Children need to move!

Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength.

In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.

Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. As one teacher said, “There is no better way to show your support for a student-centered classroom, than creating a classroom from a child’s point of view.” In her opinion, comfortable students are engaged students.
