My Project

Our school has not purchased a class set of LEGO robotics kits since 2016. The current LEGO EV3 robots we use have been retired after 20 years in the educational market. We now have collector’s items! Broken or missing pieces are nearly impossible to replace now with city-wide budget cuts. Please help me continue the 5th grade LEGO program with the purchase of the new LEGO Spike Prime kits made to replace the old EV3 kits. These kits, developed especially for schools and LEGO competitions offer a much-improved user-experience.

Spike Prime kits are remarkable for a number of reasons and will engage the creative problem-solving skills of the 5th graders.

The technic pieces are easier to build with and come in bright colors that are gender neutral. I know these accessible pieces and sensors will delight students and encourage more play along with building for stability and precision. Another improved feature is the coding platform. Instead of using software made only for LEGO robots Spike Prime uses a Scratch-like interface. (Scratch is a ubiquitous and free block and text coding language made by computer scientists at MIT University.) Spike Prime also has the coding language Python. After our semester of Scratch coding in spring 2023, many of this year’s current 5th graders really want to learn Python–a real text-based language used primarily for making websites!
