I teach 5th grade in a small public school in a rural area. Out staff work hard and our parents are very supportive. More importantly, our students are enthusiastic and eager to learn! Test scores for our school are high and we have maintained that status for several years.

There are many advantages in being a small school but because of our size we don't have the monetary resources that larger schools have. This means that our kids miss many opportunities. This puts them at a disadvantage when they move on to the middle school.

Recently, through the generous donations of Donors Choose participants, I was able to acquire a set of 10 digital cameras for my students. They have used these cameras to create newsletters, capture time elapsed observations in Science as well as many other projects. Right now, I have a group of students developing a way to disperse the water runoff more efficiently so it doesn't ruin the playground. They have taken photos of the area but only have one black and white set. This makes it difficult for them to work on the project at home unless they get together which is not always possible. A photo printer will allow them to use these photos to help in reaching a solution. They will have photos when they meet with architects and landscapers. They will be able to create a compelling presentation when the time comes. Currently, these photos are stored on a computer. Students print out their pictures but usually in black and white as the color printer we have is for limited use and the ink cartridges are expensive. By having 2 photo printers and ink cartridges, students can complete the whole photo-journalist role as well as see the impact of technology on other facets of their lives.

Math and Science are critical areas for the future. Your help will have a great impact on my students they see the importance of technology in these disciplines and how they can use the technology to impact their world.
