Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a Spanish one way bilingual immersion program.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

As a Title I school providing essential learning tools, it is vital to support students during distance learning.

My Project

Distance learning has taught us many lessons in the past months. We just completed the first few weeks of the 2020-2021 school year. Students are excited and resilient doing their best to stay engaged and learning. Both educators and students are finding creative ways to keep learning at the center of this experience. As we celebrate student engagement, participation and learning we also face daily challenges. Aside from the obvious technological challenges, learning math digitally isn't so easy for 5th graders. In the classroom we get to collaborate, talk about our math strategies and have access to an abundance of manipulatives that help us learn difficult math concepts.

The requested materials will support students with hands-on materials to support our daily math lessons.

Students can collaborate with each other digitally but these math manipulatives will support their learning process with hands-on experiences. The fraction kits will support students in learning about multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting fractions. The card decks will help students practice and sustain their multiplication and division fluency. The whiteboards will support our learning and aid students in representing their problem solving strategies during our daily math lessons.

If we go back to school physically these resources will also help us stay clean and healthy. Essentially students would be able to bring them to the classroom and take the materials home. This would help avoid contamination and icky germs being transferred. It's our new reality and we'll have to continue adapting to support our students' academic progress while prioritizing their health.
