My students need to experience activities that are outside of their normal daily routines. This trip will allow them to take advantage of the city they live in, but do not always get to explore.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school supports a growing community of ambitious learners from the South Bronx. Most of the students at this school live in low income housing and/or non-permanent apartments. The previous school was a failing school, before this school opened in 2013. Since opening, a decrease in violent behaviors has put learning at the forefront of the school day.
Students come to school feeling safe, supported, and ready to learn.
Our school serves students in grades K-5 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are consistently one of the top-performing schools in our district. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and beyond. While our students continue to grow academically, our teachers and students are limited by the resources available.
My Project
The 5th grade students have been working hard for the numerous years they have been students in our school. They are dedicated to their learning and always work hard to achieve any task that we give them. After the stresses of applying to middle school, as well as the rigorous work that is expected of them in 5th grade, we believe they deserve to explore the city they live in, but do not always get to enjoy.
We want to take our students on a trip where they can socialize and problem solve while being physically active.
Due to the lack of green space in our Bronx neighborhood, students will enjoy time on Chelsea Piers where they can be physically active in a much larger space than our school yard provides. Students will enjoy working together in team sports, as well as getting a chance to socialize with their peers, and to interact with students from other schools; just like they will have to in middle school. We see every trip, even ones in celebration as learning opportunities to create well rounded citizens.
