Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a great group of female students who have signed up for our new 5th and 6th grade basketball clinic. The girls are extremely excited! I am so proud of how hard they are working both academically and at basketball practice. Most of them have never played basketball before, but they are coming in with opened minds and are very willing to learn.

I am happy to be coaching this awesome group of girls!

I am pleasantly surprised at how well they are listening both during practice and throughout the day since our practices have begun. This is only the second week of practice and I have seen a shift in some of the student's attitudes because of how happy they are to be playing basketball.

My Project

This is the first time the 5th and 6th grade girls at P.S./M.S. 20 have had the opportunity to play basketball at our school. It is a clinic, so we are only practicing, but we are hopeful that we will have a team put together for the 2018-2019 school year! I am co-coaching the team with another female teacher. We are looking for basketball supplies for the girls. We are currently sharing the few basketballs available with the boy's team. We would love if we could have our own supplies so the girls don't have to share.

The girls are eager to learn how to play and dedicated to their practices!

The practices are from 7 to 8 am and the girls have been showing up on time, ready to play before school starts. I am astounded by how committed these girls are to playing. It shows how excited they are to finally have the opportunity to play basketball. Many of these kids don't have the chance to play in recreational leagues outside of school so they are devoted to coming to these practices. Please consider donating to our cause!
