My Students
I teach 26 dynamic second and third graders in a small, Title I public school in Northern California. My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds and family situations; yet, we come together as a class. My students each have their own learning struggles and strengths; yet, each child's individual needs must be met in our second grade classroom.
Each student learns differently; yet, each child has to master second and third grade Common Core standards. As their teacher, I must find different ways to help each child meet those standards, in two different grade levels!
My Project
Second and third graders love learning about the world around them. New non-fiction books will inspire students to ask, "Why?," as they become more inquisitive readers.
Non-fiction texts will allow students to not only read true stories but will also encourage them to write "expert" books of their own. Books that encompass all reading levels and a wide range of topics are essential to inspire learning.
National Geographic makes wonderful non-fiction books that have great examples of text features like: table of contents, diagrams, subheadings, glossaries, and more. We need books that show us the different features of book genres.
