My classroom consists of 27 highly gifted and talented 5th graders in a program called, "ATP" or "Academic Talent Program." My students are intelligent yet humble and goal-driven yet know when to slow down to look after their peers. Many also express that they feel less weird and feel a sense of belonging when we are together. This year has been the year of healing for many, and I am very grateful that I can greet my students in person every day even with our masks on rather than via small rectangular frames virtually.
My students are expressive, imaginative, and gifted in their own unique ways.
Some are avid storytellers who shine during small group and whole class discussions with their extensive and precise vocabulary. Others go above and beyond when breaking down complex problems and finding solutions during math and coding.
As their proud teacher, I always look for ways to introduce curriculum in a way that is engaging, motivating, and meaningful to all learners, regardless of their readiness, interests, or learning styles.
My Project
These books will widen my students' horizons in understanding the world beyond the classroom walls. My students enjoy independent reading time, book club meetings, and when I read aloud books and have discussions. They love reading books with protagonists they can relate to. They also enjoy learning about people who bring in different perspectives of the world to their lives.
I strive to create a classroom where students can continue to love reading and broaden their perspectives by reading books that will teach them about lives of children who lived before them and the lives of children who are living in the same era yet in totally different circumstances and environments in the world.
With these new books, my students will gain a better understanding of their own culture, feel less weird about themselves, and learn the cultures of others, so that they can break the barrier to understanding themselves and others. This project will help me and my students enrich our learning through the printed word.
