Many of the English classes on my campus incorporate choice reading into their curriculum. As a result, over the past ten years, many teachers have been developing their individual classroom libraries. It is my job as the teacher-librarian to continue to grow my own collection, and keep up with the newest releases to keep our shelves stocked with high interest, current, relevant, and diverse books for our students. Many students come to us as reluctant readers, and their love of reading has died somewhere along their educational journey.
Choice reading allows our students a break from the academic pressures of their day and provides them with an opportunity to lose themselves in a book they truly want to read.
It is my job, as their teacher-librarian, to support student literacy and get them reading as often as possible to prepare for their future. While students are able to get books from their teachers, the titles that are highly circulated are often hard to come by because they are always checked out. Adding copies of the newest releases to the library allows us to keep up with student demand and ensure they get the book they're looking for.
My Project
One of the first things my students are greeted with is a display of books we are showcasing. These displays often have a theme and change frequently throughout the school year. They are meant to be eye-catching and encourage students to browse the titles and check out a book. However, at the moment, they are only as creative as I can make them with the help of my parent volunteers, and unfortunately, none of us consider ourselves to be very crafty.
Adding a Cricut cutting machine to our library would greatly enhance our ability to design professional looking displays that will draw students to the books we hope they read.
The Cricut would help save us time in creating these displays, and enhance the possibilities for our displays due to a wide variety of fonts, images, and projects we could make. These displays will be the first thing that students see when they walk in, and we want students to gravitate towards the books we are featuring. Additionally, we plan to use the Cricut to spruce up our space and continue to make the library a warm and welcoming place for our students.
