My Students

Our middle school students come from many socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. They are bright and motivated students, yet they struggle every day to keep up with the high achievers that make up the majority of the children at our school.

They come to our school reading as much as 2 and 3 years below grade level, and while they often push themselves to decipher the difficult texts they encounter in their classes, they often end up feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.

My Project

Most of the books in our school library and in our classrooms are written for grade level readers. Yet every year we have as many as 200 striving readers who don't have access to books they can read. Our goal is to provide all students with high interest texts at their level. A library of books that students are excited about and able to read is the key to engagement and reading success.

The money from this grant would support our most vulnerable students with a research-based, school-wide literacy program aimed at raising their reading ability and improving their access to books.
