I am so excited to be at SV this year! And even more delighted to see what eager readers I have in class! In my classroom, when students read, we imagine that we are stranded on an island with just one book. We call reading time, “Island Time,” because we’re so happy and relaxed when we have a good book to read.
My sixth grade students have already covered so much this year, and I am so excited to introduce our next unit of Narrative Non-fiction.
They are eager to go on new literary adventures, sometimes with characters that look like them and lead lives like their own, and sometimes with other characters that come from different words and have different life experiences. Narrative non-fiction books will help my students learn about history while still being able to feel the experience of it, through the characters in the books.
My Project
I am so excited to dive into our next historical literary unit with my students! We have all enjoyed working together on our earlier units this year, and the next one should be even better!
We are going to read and analyze narrative non-fiction books in small groups, giving students another glimpse into history from a personal perspective.
Narrative non-fiction books teach children about important times in history, from the perspective of people who lived that history. I've requested books from a variety of time periods and locations. Students will form small book clubs and chose one of these tales to all read and study together. They'll be learning to process literature together, identify central themes and ideas, and also historical facts.
