This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

At DVMS, our percussion students are an integral part of our instrumental music program. Over the years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of students in our program wanting to learn to play percussion instruments.

According to the National Association for Music Education, students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning.

The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help imprint information on young minds.

My Project

Our percussion students need to learn how to play a number of instruments in order to become well-rounded percussionists. Many might think of snare drum and bass drum as the most integral percussion instruments in the band, but there are many more to learn.

Pitched percussion, including mallet instruments, remain an integral part of our band program.

Currently, we do not have enough mallet instruments for all of our students to play pitched percussion at the same time. It takes about three days of rotation to allow all of our percussionists to play mallet instruments. This project will increase the number of available instruments and significantly decrease the amount of time our percussionists need to wait for their rotation on the mallet instruments.
