“Curiosity is the engine of achievement,” written by Ken Robinson, speaks to how we need to best prepare our students for the twenty-first century. Our students are at the point where they love to be independent, try new things, and explore. In my classroom, I have students do research projects, explore various online resources, and practice core skills. My school consists of a wide variety of students with different abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds. My students want to learn, but some do not have access to the resources that they need.
My Project
My students need books that teach about diverse influential people in history who have made an impact in the world. While my students face many challenges, multicultural books will provide students with opportunities to view themselves and others and reflect and discuss our world today. Through diverse books, students feel valued and it creates a sense of community among the students and the classroom.
As a visual and performing arts school, students need supplies for students to allow them to unleash their creativity through a variety of hands-on activities.
A major component of STEAM learning is the integration of science in the creative learning process. One way the students will use the resources is to design and build propeller cars. Another way they will be able to integrate science with art is by making paper circuits. Students will use the LED lights to get hands-on experience making paper circuits. Students can design light-up cards, posters, robots, and even pop-up book pages. With the weaving and tin embossing resources, students will be able to make connections to history.
