Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are dynamic middle schoolers who come to school excited to learn! They are highly motivated and self-directed, kind and hard-working. As our school’s teacher librarian, I have the unique opportunity to teach and spend time with students across all disciplines. I love being able to see how multi-layered, inquisitive, and fun they are throughout the day! My students are readers, historians, scientists, athletes, mathematicians, artists, writers, among so much more. Many are very active in our school and tight-knit community. They have a willingness to leave a positive impact in the world and always do so with a smile on their face! My students are happy to be in school and to be building the skills and strategies that they will use to grow both in their learning and in their lives as a whole.
My Project
My students need creative outlets to grow and extend their learning through hands-on activities. I’ve noticed a need for such materials ever since students began using Jenga blocks to build and create! Incorporating Veatree magnetic building sticks, Lite-Brites, K’NEX, Legos, etc. into the program, students will be able to take this creativity to the next level!
Research continuously shows how STEAM and exploration in students’ lives promotes problem-solving, innovation, perseverance, real-world connections, and collaboration.
These materials are the first steps in expanding our library program to include a much-needed makerspace!
