I teach at a school where over 80% of our students come from low-income families and receive free or reduced-price lunches. Approximately, 45% are African American, 45% are Hispanic, and 20% are English language learners. They come from very diverse households.
Our students want to learn and do well, even when the statistics are not in their favor.
We, as a school, want to provide an environment where our students want to come and learn with us.
My Project
We use handouts and individualized modification resources daily in math. I am continuously making copies of notes and handouts. We have a large population of students that have individualized education plans or learning needs that require me to have different levels of the same assignment. Our lounge printer breaks down at least once a week or there is a long line. Having a classroom printer will not only enable us to print when the copier is down but also to be able to easily create needed materials for those students with individualized needs.
For lower-level students, having readily made notes or fold-ables will assist them in being able to focus more on learning the material rather than trying to copy as fast as they can.
Additionally, having a copy that they can write on and not have to share among multiple classes allow them to take ownership in their learning, it is more meaningful when they can write and draw on the math problems to show understanding. Having a classroom printer will not only assist the lower level students but all as any student will be able to come in to create and print for other classes, especially since many do not have access to computers or color printers at home.
