Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. Sixty-eight percent are Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian, and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student academically, physically, and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond. In this age of COVID-19, it is especially important for us to care for all of our students in every way possible.
My Project
On January 20, 2021, when Amanda Gorman stepped up to the podium at President Biden's Inauguration, I sensed something special was about to happen. Oh, how that was an understatement. As soon as her words started to reach her captive audience, I was mesmerized and knew my students needed to take them in for themselves.
My students created a beautiful slideshow that brought Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb" closer to their own lives and hearts.
This project allowed my students to think more deeply about Gorman's words and how they imagined to bring those words to life through imagery. The end result was a slideshow that was genuinely an effort of the heart by all.
My goal is to be able to give a copy of this poem to each of our graduates, to remind them of our work together, the power of words, and the beauty of poetry.
