A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are from all corners of the globe, landing in a diverse, lively neighborhood of a large urban area of Chicago, IL where individuality is celebrated and community members learn from each other. Students teach each other, as well as adults, about their own unique cultures, with more than seventy percent of our population being either recent new immigrants to America or first-generation Americans.
Middle school is an incredibly challenging time in a young person's life, full of choices and confusion, trying to figure out who they are and where they belong in an ever-changing world.
Coming from a variety of backgrounds, learning to be global thinkers and social justice stewards, my students are the agents of change our world so desperately needs at this very moment!
Over half of my students are English language learners, with over fifty languages being spoken in their homes, providing unique challenges for my students. In addition, many of my students are faced with numerous challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite these many challenges, often tied to economic inequity and lack of access to basic supplies, my students come to school, ready to learn!
My Project
After being at home for more than a year and a half due to the pandemic, having brand new materials for project-based learning will help start the year off on the right foot! New school supplies are something that everyone loves! I have requested Sharpies, highlighters, markers, colored paper, pens, and colored pencils. These new supplies will help my students create magical assignments and materials to showcase their learning.
Providing quality supplies that are plentiful is one small way that I can show my students how invested I am in their potential and success.
Making my classroom inviting and colorful is key to engaging my students in the rigorous instruction I provide, regardless of content area of my instruction.
