Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

My 650+ students live and study in the Hermosa neighborhood, whose Spanish translation is "beautiful." It's a working-class neighborhood on the northwest side of our city.
I'm lucky enough to be their librarian, meaning I know each and every student in our school.
Our community has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, which makes the inequities my students face even greater. My students typically have very little in terms of possessions, yet they deserve so much.
My Project
I'm so lucky to be the librarian for almost 700 students on the northwest side of Chicago. Not only that, but I work with some really amazing kids who love to read! My students love a wide variety of books. I have tons of graphic novel fans, silly picture book fanatics, science and history lovers, and even biography fiends! My students often ask for books so they can learn about other people. Sometimes, I'm surprised (in a good way!) with how inquisitive my students are in their search for a good biography. For example, through another funded project I acquired books about John Lennon, Malala, Anne Frank, Pelé, Frida Kahlo, Elizabeth Warren and Prince. Almost all of them were checked out by my in-person learners that week!
Growing up in a working class family, I, too, recall reading books about famous (and not so famous) people for inspiration.
Many of my students rarely leave their working class neighborhood of Hermosa. With covid, we haven't been able to go on field trips in over a year. I'd love to provide some books that will inspire my students to pursue their dreams. Included on this list are collective biographies such as "Kid Activists: True Tales of Childhood from Champions of Change" and "Kid Athletes: True Tales of Childhood from Sports Legends."
I'm also requesting individual biographies about important figures in Latinx and African American history, like Chance the Rapper, Stevie Wonder, Booker T. Washington and José Alberto Gutiérrez. My history buffs love to learn about US history and will be eager to learn about past presidents like John F. Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan.
