Every day, I have the privilege of being able to see two dozen smiling students, eager and ready to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds. After over a year of remote learning, my students have made the switch to hybrid learning. Providing appropriate tools to reach students where they are is more important than ever!
During this time, my students have learned so much, both in and out of the typical classroom setting.
One area of need I see in many of my students is the opportunity to connect with others and set the tone for learning each day.
My Project
During a typical school year, I strive to provide my students with "soft start" choices as they come into class. Students choose from playing with blocks, using building tools, drawing, and reading. It provides a relaxed, student-driven start to the day to help set the mood for learning and fun.
Our typical morning "soft start" choices are not available to students now because we cannot share materials.
Now that my students are back in a hybrid learning structure, I would like to provide them with access to one of our most popular choices - Plus Plus blocks. These blocks are shaped like a hashtag, and allow students to interconnect blocks to build many different objects.
With this project, students will receive a small bin for their individual use. Each bin will contain Plus Plus blocks, as well as challenge cards to build staircases, musical instruments, animals, and other shapes. This small adaptation to one of our favorite activities will allow my students to continue to learn through play while also keeping each other safe.
