We are a Chicago Public School in a neighborhood that serves 351 Pre-K through 8th grade students. Many of our families are low income English language learners, and we also have diverse learners as well as a deaf and hard of hearing population.
Art class is a safe place for these children to tell their stories.
They learn to express themselves and to think creatively in a classroom where many of the lessons have a theme of tolerance, peace, and embracing diversity.
Our school is dual language PK-3rd grade so students are learning through English and Spanish, even in the art classroom! We have also become a STEAM school, and are working to integrate art in all subjects school wide. They are so excited to finally have visual art back at their school, and love coming to art class!
My Project
This projector will give students an interactive way to look at art, artists, content, and even virtual field trips when it is safe to return to the classroom.
Social distancing and health and safety rules will prevent us from gathering on the carpet in front of the projector, and will require students to space out further back in the classroom.
We also have students with vision loss or spacial requirements for wheel chairs. Our current projector is so washed out the artwork we view is nearly impossible to visualize.
How can students learn about and become inspired by the masters and contemporary artists when they can't see the vibrant colors of Pop Art? Or the brush strokes of Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh? How can you learn about colors when you are missing an entire part of the spectrum?
