This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school has been doing remote or hybrid learning since March of 2020. Students have a need to connect to one another for social emotional support. I'm organizing a school wide reading initiative so students can continue reading for fun and to connect with one another.
My students attend a public urban high school that is 64 percent low income.
My Project
These books will be used as part of our state-wide reader's choice program. Our school has not participated in this program before, so you will be supporting our inaugural year of reading and voting on a set of young adult books from diverse perspectives. I'm excited to start this program so that students can compare their perspective on titles with the perspectives of their peers from around the state. These books will function as both a mirror of students' own culture and identities as well as a window into other people's experiences.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
