Our school is one campus with grades Pre-K through seniors, all on one campus. Most grades have fewer than 30 students. We live in a very rural area.
My classes consist of seventh through twelfth grades in English, debate, business, and technology classes, and my students who are primarily from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
These students are often in eight classes a day while still active in extracurricular activities and while also helping their families through second jobs, chores, or babysitting younger siblings while the parents work multiple jobs.
My Project
Students of today groan when you hand them pencil and paper, but technology is not always the best answer either. Students sometimes need to use pencil and paper so the challenge is how to still utilize that need but get them involved in the learning.
When watching the variety of ways that students become more engaged with basic, sometimes repetitive work, I have found that the extra large post-its and white boards make them much more eager to participate than a piece of regular paper and a pen or pencil.
These post-its, whiteboards, and bags for holding markers, will be used for brainstorming before writing and class discussions and facilitate individual and group assignments in English, technology, and debate. They can use large paper or small whiteboards and colorful markers to organize their thoughts.
