I work in a high school life skills program in Chicago. Being a neighborhood school and over 80% Hispanic and 20% African American, these students are often overlooked.
My classroom serves 39 students with autism and other intellectual disabilities.
My students work on both academic and life skills, in hopes of becoming more independent in their future. Though they might act, look, and learn differently, they deserve every opportunity to receive the best education possible. Thank you in advance for making a difference in my classroom.
My Project
Our school is made up of 3 life skills classrooms. We are partnering with our speech pathologist to create a vocational/daily living/social skills room. Most of the students we serve have autism and need to be explicitly taught skills in an authentic setting. This room will take our students out of the classroom to apply what they have learned in a safe environment inside our school. Our goal is to make every student as independent as possible, whether that's having a job or taking ownership of their personal hygiene. Help us fund our dream vocational room.
