I teach three English language arts sixth-grade classrooms with several reading levels, from bilingual to advanced readers. They enjoy reading an abundance of genres, including graphic novels, nonfiction, mystery, and drama. As a class, our goal is to read four novels together each year, aside from the books the students are reading on their own. We are seeking updated material to personalize our learning through technology and support differentiation within our classroom and online. My students are part of the Belmont-Cragin community in Chicago, Illinois. This has been a unique year for us as I engage students online during the current pandemic. I plan to continue to support my students with multicultural mentor texts, and supplemental reading and writing lessons with online platforms such as Google, Screencastify, and much much more.
My Project
The Giver by Lois Lowry is one of our favorite sixth grade science fiction novels to read together as a class. Now it's out in a graphic novel format, which is perfect for my visual and English Language Learners. My students enjoy reading "The Giver" because it is full of suspense, and pushes their critical thinking when it comes to character analysis and plot. It's also a fun coming of age story that resonates with middle school students and exposes them to higher vocabulary, which improves their writing ability and pushes their reading comprehension.
