Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are kind, intelligent, beautiful souls with potential to inspire the world for positive change through music. Our elementary school is the only Chicago Public School in the Little Village neighborhood with a Mariachi music education program.
Our school serves one of the most vulnerable communities- recent immigrants from México and Latin America in search for an opportunity to give their children a future unattainable in their homeland.
Almost all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch as 94% are raised in low-income families and 51% of them have limited English skills.
As their teacher who was once an undocumented immigrant in the U.S and a former Chicago Public School student, I strive to instill hope through music education to make opportunities, like college- possible. My music education allowed me to attain a scholarship to college, all because I kept my grades up, was Latinx and had been playing trumpet for 7 years. It is my sincere duty to inspire students that looks like me to work hard so that college isn't only a dream.
My Project
Music is a way healing. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the lives of children worldwide has changed drastically. Through music, we can resume building community by creating opportunities for social interactions and emotional expression. Learning a musical instrument can serve this purpose.
My students deserve to heal and collaborate through music by having access to portable keyboards.
It will expand the knowledge of music theory that they have learned throughout this pandemic. They will be able to perform melodies, harmonies and beats by connecting the piano keyboard to their Chromebooks/laptop, where they can work with other students through the music making software Soundtrap. The Novation Launchkey mini will allow for both students at home or in-person to be engaged in music making. Let's help them become the next concert pianist or hip beat maker!
