This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve a remarkable and unique group of children who are part of a school population of which 80% are African American and nearly 80% are low-income. Our school has defied so many odds, including attempts to shut down our high performing school, and our students and community were a primary reason we prevailed.
My students are incredibly hardworking, resilient, and collaborative, and their drive toward accomplishing things that may have once seemed out of reach is what keeps me coming back each and every day.
As a seventh year math teacher, it has always been my goal to not only make our class fun and engaging, but also applicable to the real world. In a classroom where mistakes are accepted and encouraged, students learn to challenge each other's thinking, forcing them to think critically about all possible outcomes. My students love to engage in math talk for this reason!
My Project
After living through the uncertainty that COVID-19 created in our classrooms, I want to make sure that my classroom is ready for all of my learners to return. While I currently have remediation games that can be used to scaffold skills for students to help them achieve grade level mastery, I'm hoping to build my resources to continue to push those students ready for "what's next." The Allowance Game will build financial literacy in my classroom, while the Discovery Cans will provide students with the opportunity to reinforce skills we have learned.
"I'm done" is never allowed in my classroom, as I always show my students that there's no such thing as "done learning." With these resources, I'll be able to allow students to collaborate or work independently on various math skills, while still being able to pull groups to support or enrich my students!
The math quickies are leveled for grades 4-5, which will push students to the next level! Also as a math teacher, I am always in need of more whiteboards.
