My Students
My students are between 4-6 years old and have a variety of special needs that range in significant developmental delays, autism and ADHD. My students are approximately 6 months-2 years behind the typically developing child.
All of my students struggle with a minimum of two of the following areas, communication/language skills, fine/gross motor skills, academics, and behavioral/social skills.
All of my students receive occupational therapy, physical therapy, and/or speech and language therapy on a weekly basis.
Our school is a Title I school and the majority of my students come from low-income households and all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. This program that I am seeking out will not only benefit my students with special needs but will help manage other student behavior and wellness throughout our school building, K-8th.
My Project
Being an educator is more than just teaching students important academic skills. Educators, especially those in the younger grades are also key in teaching students social skills that include self-control, mindfulness, and empathy. Studies have shown that students participating in the school curriculum that focus on emotional intelligence have lower delinquency rates, lower arrests, and lower uses of health and mental health services. These same studies show that academic skills, while still very important for future success, have less of an impact on crime and delinquency rates.
One of my goals in becoming a trained Breathe for Change teacher is to provide social-emotional support to all students in my building.
I want each child to be able to identify their personal wellness need and learn ways to "Breathe" to make their "Change".
