Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our school is located in the Albany Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. Albany Park is considered the most diverse of all Chicago neighborhoods. Our school is 94% low-income and its graduation rate is 81%. The student body is diverse and includes 73% Hispanic, 13% black, 7% Asian, and 5% white.
For the first time, our staff and students will have two full-time social workers and four academic counselors to meet the emotional and social needs of the diverse student body.
Our school offers specialty programs that include ROTC, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences, Gaming, Early Childhood Development, and Cisco Networking. The school aims to engage the student body with a well-rounded curriculum to prepare them for post-secondary education or trade school.
My Project
Schools can be overstimulating places, especially for students who have sensory processing issues. Each week, many hours of academic instruction and social interaction are lost because a student has become dysregulated and does not have the skills or the tools to self-regulate. Because self-regulation is a skill that many children have a difficult time learning and achieving without help, we would like to provide a setting where we can help them build this important life skill.
Ms. Bolton and Ms. Dec's classrooms support 20 high school students who have mild-moderate intellectual disabilities and autism.
Our program is still in a build-out phase; last year, through the generosity of a Donor's Choose program, we were able to provide flexible seating for our students. This year, we would like to create a sensory-informed component to our classrooms to add to our culture of inclusion, acceptance, and differentiation through sensory coping strategies.
This project will be used to buy various items to help students regulate their emotions through different sensory integrations (tactile, auditory, proprioceptive). The weighted blanket will provide students' with deep pressure to help with high energy levels or regulate the nervous system, headsets can be used to block out auditory stressors, or to be used to listen to soothing sounds, and various tactile items like stress balls will be used to help increase concentration and reduce anxiety.
