Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a large, urban city with a diverse population. Many of my students come from single-parent families or from families where both parents work long hours to support their families. Often times, several generations live together in the same house.

Many of my students come from homes where English is not the only language spoken, and many have come to us from other countries.

All of my students receive free lunch. I am lucky enough to teach an awesome group of middle school students who are creative, eager, and enthusiastic. They are always interested in learning more about a topic and constantly challenge me to be on my toes. I want to teach my kids the required subject matter, but I also want to teach them to be themselves, have fun learning and to love reading! Thank you for joining us on our journey.

My Project

The new push in literacy is the use of non-fiction texts. We are required to use more and more of them each year. The problem is finding ones that are interesting and then being able to purchase them. I challenged my students to research and find some non-fiction books that they would be interested in reading. The books on this list are the ones they want to read. I would love to be able to get these books to have in our classroom library. I think that they would really enjoy them, especially because they have chosen them.

There is a wonderful variety of topics in the books they have chosen.

There are books on sports, science, history, and biographies, something for everyone. I've read several of the books and think they would be a wonderful addition to our curriculum.

I believe the addition of these non-fiction texts will help my students become better readers. I gave them the task of choosing ones they would like to read and would love to be able to give them the opportunity to experience these great books. Thanks for your consideration.
