My students are from a low-income, high minority area of Chicago. They all qualify for free lunch and, for most of these children, English is their second language. The area in which they live has posted some of the highest COVID numbers in the city.
These amazing children are in Kindergarten and for most of them, this is their first school experience.
As a longtime kindergarten teacher, I was nervous about how remote learning would meet my students' needs. I am so thrilled at how these children have embraced learning and love school! For them, this is a "normal" school experience. In many ways, they are getting to know each other and learning basic skills such as letter and number recognition and beginning reading skills similar to in-class learning.
My Project
In a typical school year in my Kindergarten classroom, I give my students access to a painting easel. They can express themselves daily using a variety of colored paints. We all know this is not a typical school year. In many ways, I have found excellent online resources for academic subjects but struggle with finding creative outlets for them.
Hands-on art experiences have been a real challenge with remote learning.
Currently, I have remote students and a few in person. Even in-person students can not share materials and must social distance. I would like to give each student, remote and in-person, an art tool kit consisting of 6 Dot Art colors and a package of construction paper. Dot Art paints in a bottle with a sponge applicator to minimize spills. This will make it not messy for my at-home remote learners. All students will then have the opportunity to express themselves through paint. This is especially critical now, as many of these students have had Covid 19 touch their family life.
