Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income, high poverty neighborhood in Chicago. Over 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds.
My middle schoolers are passionate, highly motivated individuals who are excited about school and love challenging themselves every day.
My classroom includes children who come from families experiencing poverty, have limited English proficiency or have learning disabilities. However, they all enjoy discovering, working, and learning together and encourage each other in and out of school. Despite the challenges they face, our teachers always try to create meaningful academic and social-emotional experiences that pique their interests.
This year, I have the honor of teaching sixth graders. Creating fun, educational activities will allow my students to have a more engaging and creative school year as well as create great memories with their friends.
My Project
This month of February, my school is reopening! I cannot wait to meet my students face to face! Having a prepared, clean room and extra PPE for my students is a must. I plan to create a sanitation station in our science classroom. I would love to have tissue, sanitary wipes, sanitary spray, gel and extra PPE material for my students to not feel overwhelmed during class time.
Coming back to school might be scary for some of our students, they need to extra support during this difficult time!
Middle schools are bound to forget a face mask at home, or to use hand sanitizer when they touch things. During the first weeks they might want to touch everything in the classroom. Having extra cleaning supplies, like hand gels, disinfecting spray, wipes and a thermometer is a great way for them to feel safe en establish a safety school environment. Students will be rotating between hybrid (in person) and distance (online) learning throughout the week. Having a routine where they can use individual bins for them to store their belongings when they come in to the classroom, having them clean their work area is great for extra protection against Covid-19 and helps them establish a healthy, clean and safe environment at home and school.
