Help me give my students Christmas holiday books including Sneezy the Snowman and How to Catch Santa as well as novelties to help keep my students engaged and learning whether we be at school or home.
This is my young students’ first school experience, and for most, their first prolonged separation from a parent, grandparent or guardian. All of my young students are considered academically at risk. They are also learning to interact with peers for the first time all in the midst of a pandemic. These astonishing children are handling it all with kindness and respect. Each of my students is an amazing kid with endless potential if given the opportunity.
What my young students have in abundance is a lot of love, an inquisitive nature and a genuine desire to learn all nurtured by our school family..
We are a preschool in an urban, public school system. Our students receive free breakfast and lunch. To them, it doesn't matter what their lives are like at home, when they come to school they know it's a safe place that encourages them to use their imagination, allows them to explore, and helps train them to use their intellect in a fun and creative way.
My Project
Due to the pandemic, things this year are so very different, but I'm determined to share the excitement and joy of the season with my young students! We will begin by reading a story together, either in person or via our on-line format. We will discuss the care of a book, the parts of a book, and story elements, including characters, the problem, and we'll brainstorm solutions. Then each week in December, my students will receive a copy of the books to take home as their forever books, allowing them to share the story with their families. My students will be able to retell and reread the book and engage in family activities that I send home that will reinforce the concepts.
My young students will be excited for school, in person or virtual, and to share that excitement with their families!
This will help to engage the families and bridge the gap from school to home as well as promoting parental participation.
The books will be sent home in a tote bag along with special surprises like suckers, coloring books, gel pens, Christmas pencils, wristbands, notepads, glow sticks, squishy toys, suncatchers, and stampers. All these little things will allow my students to continue to learn while sharing the excitement of the holiday season through books, activities, and small surprises!
