Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach a group of amazing students that look, act, and think very similar to myself. We are a classroom full of dreamers and visionaries. Together we create a safe space that is full of questioning the norm, finding math in interesting ways, and exploring the use of math in our own worlds.
My students are mathematicians that are willing to use whatever they have to get the work and job done.
They are creative, curious and relentless in their pursuit of a quality education. Not only are they vocal about their own rights but helping those around them.
My Project
The materials in this project will be used to create, much needed, goodie bags for the homeless population in Fort Worth,TX. Nearly 15,000 children experience homelessness over the course of a year in Tarrant County. Nearly enough to fill all of the middle schools in the county. Not only will they be helping some of their fellow classmates but also learning 7th grade math along the way.
In this project, students will learn about unit rates, proportions and data while organizing and supplying the community with much needed basics.
Students will calculate unit costs for each of the items. They will use unit rate to calculate the cost of a gift bag being donated. Students will also use proportional relationships to estimate the amount of money it would take to re-create this project in other cities and counties. They will also be tackling the understanding of data on the homeless population and systems that lead to an increase in homeless population. We will use this in two of our units for the year.
Students will:
RESEARCH: over statistics and data on the homeless population in Tarrant County. (ex: factors that lead to homeless, numbers, cost to prevent and organizations that are catered to helping)
Organize: contact local churches, community centers, and homeless shelters to determine where the goody bags will be donated and distributed from.
Calculate: the unit rate of the gloves, socks, backpacks, rain ponchos, fig bars, deodorant, granola bars, toothpaste, toothbrushes, tampons, face masks, soap, tissue, fruit snacks AND the unit cost to produce each gift bag.
Estimate: the amount of each of those items needed to re-create this project for 10 other major cities. They will use proportions to estimate the total cost of each project and all of the projects.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
