Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are taking Principles of STEM, Robotics, and attending an after school STEM program. Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, including a large portion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, the hands-on experience keeps them engaged and learning.

One of my goals as a STEM educator is to integrate the STEM field throughout various topics of study.

This involves looking at how STEM impacts other areas of life: history, civics, art, antibullying, social emotional well being, etc. In order to minimize the effects of social distancing, we are looking for ways to keep my students engaged in real world applications of STEM.

The STEM field is largely geared towards men, so it is my desire to create an environment that encourages young women to be involved with and successful in STEM. Through innovative projects and STEM awareness, I am hoping to balance the ratio of male to female students in STEM fields. Also, with such a high percentage of EL students and low socioeconomic students, laboratory experience and hands-on learning is an excellent way to enrich their education.

My Project

I teach STEM, Robotics, AP Physics, and Chemistry. I have two goals for our STEM program: increase the number of females and EL students engaged in STEM and to integrate STEM into other fields of study. For this project, my goal is to integrate STEM into Civics. This project requires a high quality video camera (GoPro Hero 9) and mic (professional mic + connector). These materials will allow the students to create high quality videos for real world audiences.

The 2020 election is right around the corner, and what better way to engage my students in this process than to integrate STEM into Civic Action.

My students will use the GoPro Hero 9, connector, and mic to create a video podcast involving a STEM topic that is an election-related issue. For example, a Chemistry student could address vaping laws from a scientific standpoint. Videos will correlate to voting rights, registration, democracy, legislature, media literacy, or organizing the community around a cause. Students will participate in the KQED Youth Media Challenge to do this. This challenge is aligned to Common Core, NGSS, ISTE and CEWAC Standards and will build essential 21st Century critical thinking skills. They will write and produce their media using evidence based commentary regarding the issue. Their video will be showcased on the KQED 2020 Elections page. This month long unit will require students to research their STEM topic as it relates to the election, generate evidence-based commentary on the issue, write this into a script with bibliography, and record the video using the materials in this project. Ultimately, the students will convey their knowledge and insight of STEM and Civics integration into the broader community with real live audiences. If these projects are selected, they will be showcased on PBS and NPR, reaching a national audience!
