Help me give my students paints and supplies to stencil stormwater drains, yard signs to spread the message about where the drains flow, and a monitor to use while we chart the local drains on My Maps.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." ~W.B. Yeats.
The students I work with love learning and are always wanting to do more hands-on activities.
They love doing projects and helping to plan because it's that much more exciting. We do investigations, explore new areas on field trips, and learn about things beyond the regular classroom curriculum.
My students keep me on my toes and remind me that school needs to be fun in order for them to focus on their studies and to understand the value of an education. Their neighborhood has declined in recent years, and many go home to places where there are issues that would make a lot of adults have difficulty focusing.
They want to learn, but sometimes it is difficult to focus. Even though there are many students who lack support at home, they are given the boost they need by their teachers. With this boost, they become excited to learn, care about their education, and strive to do their best.
My Project
Over the past ten years my classes have been involved in environmental projects with local community groups and state colleges. Living in the heart of the Great Lakes, our focus tends to lean toward local watersheds and becoming stewards of our area waterways. We conduct yearly surveys of a local river using chemical testing kits, macro-invertebrate sampling, and physical observations. This year we have been invited to join the SEMIS Coalition in focusing on our neighborhood storm drains.
Students will map out their neighborhood storm drains, plot them on My Maps, and then stencil around the drains to remind people that water flows from their neighborhood directly into the Detroit River.
Part of our project will be done virtually, and the monitor will allow me to see a larger view of the area maps. We will plan to paint the area around the drains white and use stencils to spray paint blue and green message about not pouring waste down the drains. Yard signs will also be made to share information about where the local storm drains flow.
