Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently, our school district added a visual arts class in elementary schools. This is a great opportunity for our students; however, this addition was made by changing the students' music classes from twice a week to once a week. Cutting our music time in half has made each minute within our classes a crucial opportunity for learning!
My students are amazing, eager to learn, and love having opportunities to experience and explore new adventures.
This year is my sixth at my school and will definitely be challenging in this new COVID era. Before I came to the school, the students hadn't had the chance to play the recorder or have a school choir. The kids didn't have the chance to perform for their parents. They love performing for their parents! They light up with pride and self-confidence as they succeed and their parents share in these successes.
Music is the start of a journey that all the kids can take: drumming in Africa, singing games in Europe, dancing and percussion in Latin America! The possibilities are endless. A new discovery is available every single day!
My Project
In this new era of teaching, students need to be spread further out instead of being brought close to visual aids that teachers count on to help demonstrate the concepts we are trying to share.
Our students need to have bright and eye catching visuals to help draw their attention to what is important in the lesson - the Music-Go-Rounds will help bridge the gap from where they are to where the content is displayed - enhancing the students' learning and creating benefits instead of drawbacks!
The Music-Go-Round visuals cover the range from the very basic music concepts for the younger students to advanced ideas for fifth grade students. Having this wide range of manipulatives on hand will make it easier for students to grasp concepts and safer for us to maintain our social distancing.
Included in our proposal is a set of drawers (with wheels!) perfect for storing the manipulatives safely and securely. The fifteen drawers will keep the individual Music-Go-Round pieces from getting misplaced - as well as keeping them safely stored away from germs - ensuring the pieces are close at hand and ready to be used quickly.
