Help me give my students a large television screen and Chromecast to collaborate with their peers and participate in group presentations in the age of social distancing.
We are a Title I school with a majority of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and they come to school each day smiling and eager to learn. I want this project to be the spark that ignites the flame in each of my students and helps them grow to become akamai kanaka.
My students come from a town with the largest Native Hawaiian population in the world that possesses a strong sense of community and aloha.
My Project
In my classroom, I encourage mālama kaiāulu, (community contribution), and through our app design project my students will benefit from these resources by being able to demonstrate their understanding of what it means to be an effective community contributor by designing and creating apps that will help our community members learn about media literacy.
Haumana will build a strong sense of kaiāulu within our class through interactive learning opportunities with their peers.
Haumana will take part in a series of design challenges, and consider and understand the needs of their community while collaboratively developing a solution to a community problem. Haumana will participate in an iterative team project where they identify a community need, prototype solutions on paper and in the app lab, and test their solutions with real users to get feedback and drive further iteration.
Making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process because it allows haumana to identify what went wrong and through the iterative process, reflect upon their results, and come with a new iteration of their app. Through the designing and creation of their apps, haumana learn about media literacy, and through their exhibition of their final products (working app), they will share this with their peers to help spread awareness of responsible media literacy.
