Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember getting hooked on books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for and then finally reading the next installment in Harry Potter or Goosebumps. You can see the moment a child gets hooked on books. They start to sneak their book into every class, they read in the hall, they share their book with friends, and then they turn to me and ask, "Do you have anymore books like this one?"

My students are HUNGRY to read exciting, funny, scary, colorful, fantastical, and interesting new books.

This is true of all of our readers--from English Language Learners who are new readers, to readers with learning disabilities, to readers blazing through Rick Riordan's "The Lightning Thief." They all crave exciting books--and when they get them, they READ and make rapid progress.

My students attend a zoned public school in Brooklyn. By the numbers, 94% of them qualify for free lunch. For many students, our community school is a main source of healthy meals, after school care, dental care, eyeglasses, and of course, quality reading material.

My Project

The goal of this project is to supply our hardworking and deserving readers with books that they can check out for independent and home reading. And not just any books -- the books that they have been wishing for. The books that "hook" kids. In addition, each student will receive their own see-through "book pouch" that will help them safely keep the books they check out. This will help us support our reading community both at school and at home.

By donating to this project, you are helping our 4th graders grow into strong, motivated, lifelong readers.

For the past year I've been building a classroom library that speaks to our student's interests--and that is accessible to all kinds of readers. I use Scholastic, used book stores, Amazon, First Book Marketplace, Project Cicero, and lots of my own funds to make sure our students have accesss to books like Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Princess in Black, and the Amulet Series -- the books that make kids excited to read. The growth of our small classroom library has been outpaced by our students' reading appetites--which is great, but it means we need new titles!

This project is to fill out our small but growing collection with the newest installments in series the students love, and new titles by authors who are class favorites--and it will supply students with book pouches that will support the care and keeping of checked out books.
