Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What is a better word to use for sad?" one of my 4th grade students recently asked me. "Grab a thesaurus." was my response. With a huge smile, my student ran to get one. Instead of returning with that same smile, he had a face of disappointment and a thesaurus missing all but a few pages.

I teach a wonderfully diverse mix of fourth graders.

Not only are my students varied in their backgrounds and ethnicities, they are also incredibly diverse in their abilities and learning styles. I am the general education teacher in an ICT class, which stands for Integrated Co-Teaching. I work collaboratively with a wonderful special education teacher. Our class is made up of 60% general education students and 40% special education students. The way that we run our classroom is barrier free and completely integrated, making it almost impossible to differentiate between which of our students are labeled as special ed students.

My Project

Increasing vocabulary is incredibly important for all aspects of literacy. My co-teacher and I strive to teach our students how to enhance their writing using all different types of resources. Using a child friendly thesaurus is a terrific way to allow our students to independently deepen their vocabulary. This allows all of our different learners to feel extreme success and empowerment over their own learning. Unfortunately, with funds at an all time low, we are working with very limited supplies. We currently have 15 thesauruses in our classroom, none of them being complete. Many of these resources are missing more than half of their pages, making it almost impossible for my students to benefit from their use.

With the donation of a class set of thesauruses, you will give an anxious group of diverse learners the ability to take their vocabulary and independence to the next level.

This will also be the gift that keeps on giving. Not only will these resources impact my current students, they will continue to be used for many years to come.
