This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are wonderful and hardworking. They are mostly from low socioeconomic background and are usually without most school supplies. Asking them to purchase a camera for the writing class is totally out of the question.

This year we are incorporating journalism into our curriculum giving students the opportunity to write for the school newspaper and website.

We started this last year with student volunteers and it was such a success that I have decided to continue it as a whole class project.

Students will learn journalistic writing in 4th grade and this could be the start of a career for any one of them.

My Project

Our students need as much academic assistance as possible. The cameras are a window into a new world that they could possibly turn into a career as a photo journalist or photographer.

Above all, students need to have exciting access to writing because it is a foundational skill that is used in most careers regardless of title.

Writing about a photo that you took is an excellent strategy for reluctant writers.

It is important for students to be exposed to unfamiliar careers-In this case journalism, photo journalism, and photography. This addition to the classroom will make writing more enjoyable and fun.
