My Students

Using animals in the classroom is one of my "teacher tricks." Live animals and/or pets is one sure-fire way to reach some students who are not motivated to learn. It's true! Sometimes when I simply CANNOT get a student to do his best on an assignment, my guinea pig can! I know, it's weird!

Our school is a small K-8 elementary school in rural Middle Tennessee.

Over 75% of our students live in economically disadvantaged homes, but most students have supportive families. Thankfully, I work in a close-knit school family...our teachers are great to help each other and help families that we know are in need. There is a huge advantage to working in a school like mine. You see, I live in the school community, so I know my students' families. This means that I have a personal interest in my school! It's not just a job to me. Teaching is a part of my life--a part of me! These are "MY" kids! I want my students to overcome the obstacles they face. I want them to have the opportunity to go to college. In order to do this, I have to motivate my students NOW! So many of our students want to drop out when they lose the motivation to learn, so when high school rolls around, they're ready to quit. There has to be a way to combat this problem.

My Project

One of my students received a small chick incubator for her birthday recently. She brought it to school with several eggs, and in 21 days we had 4 baby chicks! We were able to see the development change from day-to-day. We discovered that unfertilized eggs did nothing (except stink when broken!). We even watched one chick hatch! We were sad when one chick didn't develop properly and didn't make it. This is what motivates kids to keep learning! Our guinea pig is a member of our class because she teaches us so much. Some students have never had the responsibility that comes with a pet. They learn about compassion and even love! Some students find that they learn more when they become engaged in a project. Can you help me get an incubator like the one I used this year so I can share this project with all of my future students?

Yes, animals often reach students when I can't.

Classroom pets and "Pet Day" are something kids look forward to in 4th grade. I want to add a "chick project" to 4th grade highlights because we learned so much about how animals develop. It was amazing to witness the excitement in my kids' eyes! Can you help purchase the incubator? I will buy the cage, food, and heat lamp. Thanks for your interest in my classroom!
