Our rural school is small but we have a collective desire to Create, Motivate and Educate, Lifelong Learners, Everyone, Every Day! Our classroom is full of pride and innovation. My students are active, inquisitive, and eager to use Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math while they are cooking.
Our school is located just outside a Military Training Installation in Missouri.
Thirty-eight percent of our student body is made up of children who come from military families. These military students move around quite often, and we want to be sure that when they leave our district, they leave with the right set of tools and are ready wherever they go.
My Project
My students need cast iron pans, microwaves, storage rack for their pans, spices, page protectors for their recipes, and sewing supplies so they can learn during real life situations in the Family and Consumer Science classroom. This equipment will allow them to think like scientists, mathematicians, and engineers as they explore the STEM design process and solve cooking and sewing problems while helping others!
My students are motivated by things they see value in, and hands-on activities.
With STEM education, students become critical thinkers, increase science and math skills and become the next generation of innovators.
Innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science. Despite these compelling facts, mathematics and science scores on average among U.S. students are lagging behind other developing countries. I feel compelled to do my part to help close that gap!
My students will learn culinary skills as well as sewing skills that will incorporate math, science, engineering, and technology in my FACS classes. Since we use the majority of our budget to purchase the food items, it is important that they are given this equipment to do their jobs. When the students leave FACS class, they will have skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. They are able to prepare meals as well as sew and repair textiles.
