I serve a school where over 80% of our students come from low-income families and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Approximately, 45% are African American, 45% are Hispanic, and 20% are English language learners. My sixth-grade students are active and budding young adults, but they are still children. They have been given challenges that even some adults have a hard time dealing with. They come from very diverse households. They want to learn and do well even when the statistics are not in their favor. Many go home and care for siblings while their main caregiver works a second job, while some are homeless and need to worry more about where their next meal comes from instead of their math assignment.
I want to provide a learning environment where every student can come in and be successful.
I am working towards transforming my traditional classroom. I want my students to have all the opportunities to have a choice in how they learn with flexible seating options, a variety of math center activities, STEM/STEAM opportunities, and a classroom behavior system that encourages students to learn more each and every day.
My Project
Having the right technology opens doors in a classroom and can turn the most basic lessons into real-life experience and increase engagement. Technology can give my struggling students more ways to practice their basic skills. My high achievers will have a new way to share their knowledge with others. I am at the beginnings of incorporating more online lessons so students may learn and be challenged at their pace.
My students need an iPad so that they can explore websites that promote learning how to count and budget money, know the value of money and recognize the importance of being financially knowledgeable.
These kid-friendly websites can reinforce concepts that I teach in a fun and entertaining manner. In addition to the use of the websites, the iPad can be used to make flashcards, monthly budgets, and research about job salaries, money-saving tips so that my students can practice recognizing and knowing the value of money and money budgeting. Please help my students have the technological access needed to expand their learning. We are constantly learning and expanding our minds. With the right tools, we can help students reach their full potential in their learning process.
