My students are special education students in a math inclusion classroom. At times, because of their learning disabilities, they face challenges but with constant encouragement from myself, the classroom teacher, as well as their peers, I have seen them make tremendous growth and even when things are difficult for them, they persevere.
Students with learning disabilities deserve a chance to succeed in school using whatever modality it takes to help them reach for the stars.
I work with students in grades 4 to 7 and spend 45 to 90 minutes a day in each class reinforcing and reteaching what the class is learning. At times, it is difficult because the students have many stumbling blocks such as problems processing information, short retention of information, language delays, low cognitive abilities, trouble retrieving information previously learned, just to name a few. However, they never cease to amaze me when they don't give up and we come up with a different way to work through a problem.
The benefit of having an inclusion teacher in the room is that not only students with learning disabilities, but all students benefit from having two teachers in a room.
All kids love to eat yummy, buttery popcorn and it makes students feel good knowing that they worked hard to deserve it. When the popcorn comes out of an old fashioned popcorn machine, it makes it even more special to them and pushes them to work and behave even better. By giving my students this popcorn machine and popcorn for it, you are motivating my students to work hard on both their academics as well as their behavior. Students love to be rewarded for doing well and love to be acknowledged for the good that they have done. By giving them this popcorn machine, each time my students reach a certain amount of points using the classdojo program which creates a positive culture for targeted skills such as working hard, being kind, helping others or something else they will be able to have an amazing popcorn party. When the hallway starts to smell of delicious popcorn, it will continue to motivate all students to want to do well. Because many of my students are special education students in an inclusion classroom, they work harder than other students and deserve to be rewarded for what they are doing well in. In addition, the general education students will benefit as well.
