I work in a middle school with students who have great ideas but lack the ability to produce them into tangible products. Throughout the year we will be learning about how 3D printers work and how they can be used to make end products through out math and science classrooms. We use 3D printing to develop new ways of thinking on mathematical concepts from measurement conversions, to understanding cost per unit to even creating scale models of real world items that they might never have a chance to see outside of a textbook or internet picture.
My Project
As we strive to reach STEM gold in our school and our classrooms, my students desire to be able to print with multi-materials and colors. 3D printing is becoming more and more student friendly and allows for rapid prototyping of student solutions to challenges. We teach our students that STEM is rooted in 4 key components of 21st century skills: critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.
My students need a Palette 2 and a compatible 3D printer to fully embrace their 21st century potential.
As we dive into our real world projects, my students are finding that pre-made solutions are not a one fix all type of thing. They are finding the need to design their own solutions to the problems and challenges they face.
The X1 Printer will allow us to print with a variety of materials thanks to its direct drive extruder, while the Palette 2 will allow us to print with up to 4 materials/colors at once. Together we will be able to print our student designs with flexible materials or soluble supports.
