I teach in a suburban elementary STEM magnet school. My 600 students are hungry to learn. They and their families value education and are appreciative of the varied opportunities that we offer to enrich and challenge them. The faculty works hard to go above and beyond what is required by the standard curriculum to provide them with opportunities to problem solve, think critically, and work in teams.
My students enthusiastically embrace engineering challenges which leads me on frequent searches for new ways to inspire them.
We are preparing students for careers that do not yet exist.
My Project
Everyone knows practice makes perfect, but practicing basic computation can get boring a hurry. Couching skills practice in a game format will motivate my students to work on perfecting the skills I have taught in whole group instruction.
By tweaking the game rules or playing cards that normally accompany familiar board games, I can shift the skills focus to addition and subtraction practice, geometry vocabulary, comparing fractions and decimals, or shape recognition, making each game for the needs of a specific small group on any given day.
My students will ask for math stations time because they see it as play, and I'll encourage it because I know the skills practice and enrichment they are getting by playing. Everybody wins in this game!
